SolarCentre® Dorada Outdoor Solar Festoon Lights

These count amongst the better quality solar-powered lights I’ve had the pleasure of owning. As well as being sturdy and functional, they look really eye-catching strung around my pergola. The first thing I noticed about this kit was the size and shape of the solar panel. It’s substantial, leaf-shaped, and comes with the option of charging by USB if desired. It is supplied fitted with just the one battery but with space for three if you ever need a longer-lasting charge for a special occasion. The panel can be staked into the ground or secured via a bracket to the wall. One feature I really like is that it can be quickly and easily removed and taken indoors for charging when it is overcast. There are indicator lights on the back to show the level of charge. Although the actual bulbs are very small, they reflect well off the gold-colored, filigree-effect, metal shades, giving a really lovely display. The lights will automatically switch on at dusk and switch off again after seven hours, rather than simply going until they run out of power. At £44.99 (at the time of the review), these cost more than I’d normally pay for a string of festoon lights. However, the bonus here is quality, and these get all the stars from me.

These lights have a sturdy, good-sized solar panel in the shape of a leaf. The back comes off via a twist-to-unscrew cover, to reveal options for USB charging/solar charging and other controls/options. It has one large battery which charges up in sunshine to power the lights after dark - I have found this one battery to be sufficient but you can add others if you need to. The bulbs inside the light cages are tiny, but with the copper-coloured cages being lit up from within the effect is very eye-catching. They also look pretty when unlit, with the sunshine catching the bright metal wire shades. The first two photos on the seller page give the impression there is some type of transparent inner tube / large design bulb. For clarity this is not the case - the bulbs are tiny as can be seen on picture 3 if you zoom in a bit and the larger area within the metal wire shades is empty. The connector is unique - I have several solar powered things in my garden from other lights, to pond bubblers and fountains and the connectors for the solar panels are interchangeable, but this one has a unique multi-pinned connector. This run of lights is enough for around my front porch - they don't look Christmassy so the neighbours won't think I've gone mad. They would make a nice festoon decoration trailing from pole to pole, or would also look nice hung low, I think, almost like a low chain-link fence along a border. I have a feeling the shine will go off the metal shades after a little while but I'll be happy to be proven wrong on this. These cost more than most garden solar light sets - they are very pretty, but I have a feeling a lot of the value/cost is in the meaty-looking solar panel, which the seller makes a good deal of.
