    About Learning Resources

Children need to play like they need to eat and sleep. Play is a fun, joy-filled part of childhood and is an essential ingredient in learning. Through play, children map out what they know about themselves and their world and test their understanding against the concepts they come across in real life.

There are so many ways children play, from pretend play to creative play, to object play and more. Each helps children learn as they grow. For over 35 years Learning Resources has helped children love to learn about themselves and their world through hands-on discovery and play. We make toys that spark their imaginations, encourage exploration, and inspire discovery. When the toy you choose is from Learning Resources, you're helping your child build who they will become. Our educational toys and games are created to spark curiosity and discovery and inspire a lifelong love of learning.

From early childhood development, to preschool readiness to play-based learning for primary school ages, Learning Resources has over 1,000 fun educational toys and games that support learning through play.

Whether your child dreams of being an architect or a zoologist when they grow up, let’s Build Someone Amazing together.

We had these when I worked in a school, but to be honest I never had enough time to really make progress with the strugglers for all the usual reasons! Now having broken free and tutoring privately, I have lots of children who struggle with maths. I get great results using hands-on resources but having had a child recently diagnosed with Dyscalculia and some others possibly similar, I bought the Ronit Bird book. I decided to try these as she recommends them and wow! Very interesting! I've only had them a week and have tried them with four or five kiddies and we love them. They are very revealing (I'm a detective when looking for gaps) and they brought out tons of conversation. They really are limitless. The kiddies caught on right away that the red was worth two etc and because it's only a small pack we naturally needed to use other rods to make up the numbers so they are learning more all the time. I absolutely love them. I didn't want plastic as I love tactile resources and wood is much nicer. I've ordered the Numicon number line as apparently they fit and I feel I need this to really help. I really can't praise them enough. The only problem is that the set is too small for me, I want 10 10's, so I'm going to buy a bigger set. My other complaint is that the tray is rubbish. The edges are rounded inside, so the rods don't go to the edge and sit right! I e binned the box and bought a big zip up bag from the Pound Shop. Can't wait to use them again next week. Just Fab!

I decided to start using cuisenaire rods in private one-on-one English classes recently because I noticed that many of my students were getting frustrated with how their grammar knowledge relates to the English they were picking up in day to day life. There seems to be quite a lot of paranoia amongst students that the English they are being taught isn't the same as the English that is actually used!! I was just curious to find out what sort of effect the rods would have...

After gaining some familiarity, I am finding that many students now illustrate EVERYTHING (including timelines for verb tenses) with rods!! After two weeks, they are using the rods to illustrate stories, to show comparatives and superlatives, to show different verb tenses in a sentence, to indicate subordinate clauses, to convert sentences into questions, to stand in place of people, vehicles, etc. when considering hypothetical situations, and even to help re-enact their favourite football moments!!

Students started with puzzled looks on their faces when I introduced them and one even found it a bit patronising that I was using little coloured rods to help things along. Then - once they realised how useful they are - they forgot that the rods look like something out of a nursery and started innovating new ways of using them! After showing students that the rods can represent ANYTHING they are now showing me new ways of using them all the time!!

My recommendation for one-on-one classes: just put them in the middle of the table and see what happens! You'll be amazed!!

A short note on the product: if you don't want to lose all the tiny 1-unit and 2-unit rods during your first class then I suggest that you buy two or three clear plastic envelopes from Ryman's (where they are dirt cheap). The plastic container that the rods come in is practically designed to help you lose them!!

My son requested some of these to play with at home as he likes them at school. He's very happy with them and does indeed do all sorts of playing with them.

I can see their value but I do think they're a little over priced for what they are, I paid £17.99. A lower price or more in the box for the price would have been nice in an ideal world.

This is a versatile set of Cuisenaire Rods, in a good selection of lengths and bright colours. Cuisenaire rods have various functions in teaching and learning. They are of course good for visualising arithmetic. But they can also be used in language teaching, to represent syllables and stresses. This is a sturdy set that should prove pretty indestructable.
